Dryden's political stance has often been discussed from various points of view. In this paper, I discuss his political stance as well, focussing on his attitude toward operas, which were imported from Italy. His attitude toward foreignness has much importance when we discuss his political stance after the Revolution in 1688, for he is thought to have had a Jacobitic stance after the Revolution. Critics say that Dryden rejected William and Mary, who had come from Netherlands to govern England, as well as he rejected operas. My contention is, however, that Dryden did not reject them but accept them, and that his acceptance can be seen from his attitude toward operas. Firstly, his attitude toward operas before he wrote them is surveyed. Secondly, his attitude after he wrote them is analysed. Next, the prologue of King Arthur, which was written after the Revolution, is discussed, and finally, to clarify how his acceptance of operas (foreignness) is reflected in the text is attempted. |
