本論文は「日本はどのように西洋(特に英国,米国)のメディアによって報じられているか」に関する観察と分析である。娯楽用としか思えない歪曲,誇張された内容の記事が一流の高級紙の紙面をかざることを問題とする。そうしたソフト・ニュースを対象とした論文である。外国報道には様々な思惑としたたかな計算とがある。こういった記事が何故書かれるのか。どうしてその国の人々にとっての「娯楽」となり得るのか。そこに散りばめられているステレオタイプ・イメージはどういう歴史を持っていて,なぜ再生されて生き続けるのか。New Journalismと名付けられるこういったメディアの特徴を整理する。ここに登場する日本は外国が手に掲げる「歪んだ鏡」に写し出された日本である。日本はそれを放置すべきか,また何らかの手を講ずるべきか。 |

This essay examines and analyses reports on Japan that have appeared in English-language media, mainly in the U.K. and the U.S.A., over the past few years. The articles have been published in reputable newspapers and magazines. However, from the perspective of a Japanese reader, they often draw on time-worn stereotypes and demonstrate only a superficial understanding of Japan and its culture. Unfortunately, the result is that the image of Japan often seen overseas is one that has been reflected in a 'cracked mirror'. The essay looks at a number of related issues, including why these stereotypes have survived for so long; how the situation can be improved; certain problems within Japan itself; the impact of commercialism on journalism; and changes in the editorial policies of the U.K. and the U.S.A.. |
